Magellan Explorer

Magellan Explorer is a new and modern expedition vessel custom build for our Antarctic air-cruises. She was built in Chile to the latest Polar Code specifications.

The ship features a glass-enclosed observation lounge and presentation room with state-of-the-art audio-visual equipment, a spacious and stylish dining room, a well-stocked bar, a library, a meeting room, a gym, a sauna, and a medical clinic. The forward-facing observation deck leads to the bow of the ship, which is accessible to guests to offer proximity to marine wildlife. The ship has a fleet of 10 Zodiac boats that are well suited for disembarking and wildlife watching.

TECHNOLOGY & FUEL

• Low-sulfur MGO with IMO Tier III engines.
• Marorka platform optimizes fuel consumption.
• Zodiacs use locally produced synthetic e-Gasoline.

CO2 Emissions

CarbonNeutral® certification combines emissions measurement, reduction, energy efficiency and certified offsetting. A heat-recovery system reuses engine heat for onboard heating and freshwater production. Locally produced e-Gasoline, made from green hydrogen and recycled CO₂, powers Zodiac operations through a partnership with HIF Global.

Waste Management

Waste is segregated, compacted, stored onboard and delivered to authorized facilities, with no solid-waste discharge in Antarctic waters. The vessels use reverse-osmosis freshwater systems and water recycling, while the company minimizes onboard plastic use.

Citizen Science Programs

Five citizen-science programs support Antarctic research, including FjordPhyto (phytoplankton and ocean measurements), Happywhale (whale identification), PolarTag (wildlife identification and tracking), Seabird Surveys (bird distribution data), and a fifth program supported through the onboard science program. Dedicated laboratories aboard the Magellan Explorer and Magellan Discoverer support sample collection, research and guest participation.

Local First Initiative / Communities

Local initiatives in Punta Arenas are supported, focusing on science, education, conservation, and culture. Local suppliers and partners are prioritized, while collaborations with GIZ and the Chilean Antarctic Institute support green-hydrogen research for Antarctic infrastructure. A partnership with HIF Global also supports locally produced e-Fuel in the Magallanes region.
