The Greg Mortimer utilises some of the latest advancements in naval design & technology to revolutionise the small ship expedition cruising experience. The X-Bow® hull makes sailing smoother and faster, and the new virtual anchoring system uses GPS and high-tech steering to hold the ship’s position so that sea floor is protected. The Sylvia Earle also uses the same technology. Shore excursions are also made easier with four sea-level Zodiac-loading platforms and an activity preparation area, designed in close consultation with our world-renowned expedition and activity leaders.

Waste Management

MARPOL-compliant waste and wastewater management systems ensure responsible treatment and disposal of onboard waste. Advanced ballast water treatment filters marine organisms and applies UV sterilization before discharge, reducing the risk of invasive species transfer. Reverse-osmosis desalination systems produce freshwater onboard, minimizing reliance on port water supplies, while refillable water stations help reduce single-use plastic consumption.

Citizen Science Programs

Greg Mortimer operates as a mobile research platform supporting Aurora Expeditions’ citizen science initiatives. Guests contribute to projects including HappyWhale, FjordPhyto, NASA GLOBE Clouds, seabird and penguin monitoring, and microplastic sampling. Aurora collaborates with scientific partners such as Oceanites, Friedlaender Lab, and Reef Life Survey, allowing expeditioners to contribute valuable observations and data to ongoing marine and polar research.
