Launched in 2020, Le Jacques Cartier is an ice-strengthened expedition yacht featuring 92 staterooms and suites, all with private balconies. Its sleek profile and contemporary interiors combine refined comfort with an intimate atmosphere, ideal for exploring remote destinations around the world.
Among its highlights is the Blue Eye, a multi-sensory underwater lounge below the waterline, where guests can observe and listen to the marine world through windows inspired by the eye of a cetacean. Its modular marina platform provides direct access to the sea for activities such as swimming, snorkeling, kayaking and paddleboarding.
TECHNOLOGY AND FUEL
CO2 Emissions
The vessel uses 100% low-sulfur marine gas oil (LS MGO, 0.05% sulphur content), catalytic converters to reduce emissions, and shore power connections in equipped ports. Hydrodynamic hull design, route optimization and reduced cruising speeds help lower fuel consumption and atmospheric emissions. LED lighting also reduces onboard electricity demand.
Waste Management
Onboard waste is sorted and tracked, with approximately 60% recycled. Single-use plastics are eliminated through reusable stainless steel water bottles, water fountains and fabric laundry bags. Wastewater treatment systems, eco-friendly cleaning products and local sourcing practices further support responsible resource management.
Citizen Science Programs
Environmental monitoring includes underwater sensors and systems designed to reduce noise and vibrations, supporting the study and protection of marine environments. Environmental officers oversee onboard procedures and crew training to promote responsible operations.
Scientific research opportunities are supported through PONANT Science, in collaboration with the World Ocean Council (WOC). Le Jacques Cartier joined the program in 2025, with mobile laboratory equipment intended to support onboard research. The initiative facilitates marine and environmental studies, including biodiversity, ecosystem monitoring and ocean conservation. Researchers can share their findings with guests through onboard presentations and educational activities
Local First Initiative / Communities
Before landings in sensitive natural areas, biosecurity protocols require the decontamination of boots and clothing to prevent the introduction of invasive species. Polar operations follow IAATO and AECO guidelines, supporting responsible tourism and environmental protection in Antarctica and the Arctic.
